I often walk the sinewy wooded banks of Ramapo River,
\nBut generally I am alone in the immersions into the ethereal scenery,
\nSlaking my thirst for loneliness and beauty.<\/p>\n
I spent my life in small,
solitary pursuits,
\nBelieving life is more important
\nThan the person temporarily possessing it.<\/p>\n
The world around me is occupied and single-minded,
\nLike an addict on a
\nSeemingly grand though fatalistic trip to some searing plateau.<\/p>\n
People don\u2019t have time to look around and absorb,
\nOther humans the unavoidable parts of the scene,
\nTheir will to live can be carried out only one way.<\/p>\n
Seeing my maverick mien,
\nThe world does not tire reminding me that I have nothing,
\nNot quite understanding it I continue to live as I have always done.<\/p>\n
But in my meditative moments
\nI have tried to plumb the
depths of the culture surrounding me,
\nAnd have come up with some seminal insights:<\/p>\n
Materialism and individualism are the boundless goals of our age,
\nGreat effort is expended to have God on your side,
\nFulfillment is to be possessed by self-glory.<\/p>\n
People believe in and work hard to have good-times,
\nBut good-times come and go, often without leaving a nurturing residue,
\nNot wanting to give up, people seek them again and again.<\/p>\n
The world is right that I do not possess those ornaments –
\nI walk askew to the flow of its culture,
\nI am alone but not lonely.<\/p>\n
For me wealth serves only utilitarian purposes:
\nComfort and style are wholesome – but not crass opulence and vulgarity;
\nThe day when money replaces God will be the end of humanity.<\/p>\n
I need liberation and not possession,
\nI need affirmation of my values through my life,
\nNot their recognition by others.<\/p>\n
There is great beauty in nothingness,
\nIt focuses on searching the human spirit,
\nAnd the spirit of the grand architecture of nature behind it.<\/p>\n
Space around us
\nBeckons us to infinity and beauty –
\nIt is never empty.<\/p>\n
I have nothing,
\nBut I am on the grand voyage
\nTo become one with the universe.<\/p>\n
