class=\"wp-block-heading\">The confusion starts here!<\/h2>\n<p>If you decide to (hopefully temporarily) go on a \u201crestrictive\u201d eating program\u2026..also known as a \u201cdiet\u201d, where do you go to find out which one?\u00a0 Your neighbor, co-workers, doctor, facebook, Instagram, google.<\/p>\n<p>Just for grins, I typed in \u201cdiets\u201d on google.\u00a0 The top 4 hits were advertisements for different diets.\u00a0 The 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0was a link from usnews.com listing the top 5 ranked diets (Mediterranean, DASH, The Flexitarian, Weight Watchers and Mayo Clinic).\u00a0 Who do or can you trust?<\/p>\n<p>From my point of view, these are all just jump off points.\u00a0 You need to do your own research to determine which diet (if any) fits your goals, lifestyle, time constraints and any other personal considerations.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget to ask yourself if there are any health risks associated with these diets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The top 5 in summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Top 5 in Summary:<\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>Mediterranean:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Widely recognized as a healthy diet, it includes moderate portions of fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes, potatoes, nuts, seeds, olive oil, fish, poultry, dairy and eggs.\u00a0 The only minimal item, other than sweets, is red meat.\u00a0 This omega-3 fatty acid rich diet is considered heart healthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>DASH:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, was developed based on research done by the National Institutes of Health.\u00a0 Developed to reduce high blood pressure, this diet\u2019s focus is on low-fat healthy foods and avoids fatty meats, full-fat dairy, coconut\/palm oil and sweets.\u00a0 It\u2019s baseline is 2,000 calories per day with 55% carbs, 21% unsaturated fats, 6% saturated fats and 18% protein.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Flexitarian:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0This is a mostly vegetarian diet with occasional eating of fish and poultry.\u00a0 It is primarily plant based with room for some animal products.\u00a0 Usually, vegan diets show a reduced risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.\u00a0 The flexitarian diet is not as restrictive as a complete vegetarian diet.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Weight Watchers:\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>A popular diet which assigns point values to food.\u00a0 The dieter must stay within a certain daily point value that matches their goal.\u00a0 This may be the most mentally tough.\u00a0 People have succeeded on this diet but what happens when you come off the diet?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Mayo\u00a0<\/em>Clinic<em>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Developed by the Mayo Clinic, this is a 2-pronged diet that first focuses on jump-starting your weight loss and then getting into a maintenance program.\u00a0 Rather than being precise on calculating food intake, the effort is put on eating more nutritious food, like vegetables, fruit, whole grains and nuts.\u00a0 The idea is to enjoy all your food but focus more on the nutrient dense food types.\u00a0 A big part of this program is an awareness of what you are eating and the amounts you are eating.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what\u2019s next\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>There you have it, a quick synopsis of the top 5 Google-searched diets.\u00a0 Is one better than the other?\u00a0 You\u2019ll have to
