Both-sided neck/base of the skull tension is the most common neck complaint, Kieran has probably treated thousands over the years. There are 4 main factors why this is a common area of complaint.

  • There are over a dozen muscles that attach to the upper neck/base of the skull and these stem other areas of the spine such as the mid/upper back, shoulders, and front on the neck, there are also several trigger points that refer to the base of the skull.
  • The joints in the upper neck are pain sensitive, as there are a dozen or so muscles attaching to the upper neck this can compress and aggravate the sensitive joints causing pain and stiffness. This is why it’s best to get a treatment that treats the muscles with chiropractic adjustments.
The skull, which is fixed/immobile is sitting on the realtive mobile upper neck, with many sensory nerve input and can be an area that is more secceptable to strain.
  • Two constants in most people’s lives are sitting for extended periods and stress, which are two common aggravating factors, that cuase tension at the base of the shull.

This tension can be intermittant that come’s and goes over a matter of days/weeks or it can become chronic/persistant occuring months at a time and very much connected to mid and upper back pain and may lead to tension headaches. To effcetively treat this neck pain it’s important all the major muscles are treated and not just the painful area (base of the skull).
