What is specialty compounding?

Specialty compounding refers to the customized preparation of pharmaceutical medications by pharmacists to meet specific patient needs. This practice involves the mixing, combining, or altering of ingredients to create medications that are tailored to individual requirements, often when commercially available options are not suitable. Specialty compounding allows pharmacists to adjust dosage forms, strengths, and formulations to accommodate diverse patient preferences, allergies, or sensitivities and provides a personalized approach to a patient’s individual needs.

Some common reasons why a compounded medication may be needed:

Allergies or Sensitivities: Patients may have allergies to certain ingredients, additives, or preservatives commonly found in commercially available medications. Compounding allows pharmacists to create formulations without these problematic components.
Dosage Adjustments: Some patients may require customized dosage strengths that are not readily available in commercially manufactured medications. Compounding enables pharmacists to prepare medications with specific dosages tailored to individual needs.

Flavor Preferences: Particularly relevant for pediatric and geriatric patients, compounding allows pharmacists to add flavors to medications, making them more palatable and increasing patient compliance.
Discontinued or Unavailable Medications:
In some cases, a commercially available medication may be discontinued, or there may be shortages in the supply chain. Compounding offers an alternative solution by recreating the medication for patients.
Unique Dosage Forms: Patients with difficulty swallowing pills may benefit from medications in alternative dosage forms such as liquids, creams, gels, dissolvable tablets, or transdermal patches, which can be prepared through compounding.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Compounding is frequently used in hormone replacement therapy to create customized formulations of hormones, such as bioidentical hormones, based on an individual’s hormone profile.
Veterinary Medications: Animals may have specific medication needs that are not met by commercially available products. Compounding enables the preparation of medications in forms and flavors suitable for different animal species.
