Pharmacists have taken on an expanded role in healthcare by being authorized to assess and prescribe for minor ailments. This development marks a significant shift in the accessibility and convenience of healthcare services for residents of the province.

With this new authority, pharmacists in British Columbia can now directly assess common health issues without the need for a doctor’s prescription. This means patients can receive timely care and medication right at their local pharmacy, often without having to wait for a doctor’s appointment.

In British Columbia, pharmacists are able to assess and prescribe, if appropriate, for the following conditions:

  • Acne (mild)
  • Allergic rhinitis (nasal allergy symptoms)
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Dermatitis (allergic, atopic, diaper, or seborrheic)
  • Dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps)
  • Dyspepsia (indigestion)
  • Fungal skin infections (e.g., ringworm, athlete's foot, jock itch,
  • onychomycosis, tinea
  • corporis infections, tinea cruris infections, or tinea pedis infections)
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn/acid reflux)
  • Headache (mild)
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Herpes labialis (cold sores)
  • Hormonal contraception (birth control)
  • Impetigo (superficial skin infection)
  • Oral ulcers (canker sores)
  • Oropharyngeal candidiasis (oral thrush)
  • Musculoskeletal pain (muscle pain)
  • Nicotine dependence (smoking cessation)
  • Threadworms and pinworms
  • Urinary tract infection (uncomplicated)
  • Urticaria, mild (hives, bug bites, and stings)
  • Vaginal candidiasis (yeast infection)
